The Naval War College was created by Lieutenant Stephen B. Luce in 1884, making this the oldest school of its kind in the country. During his service in the 1860s, Luce saw the need for an institution that would go deeper into the details of war and tactics than the Naval Academy was at the time, and pushed for its creation. The college and its staff, which included the military’s first civilian instructors, were able to “foresee” most of the strategies that would be used in World War II, especially those related to submarine and aircraft operations. In the 1950s, the school’s student body grew to include all branches of the military as well as the addition of “Military Chairs” to provide extra knowledge and talk about the newest areas of technology and international affairs. Over a century after its creation, in 1990, the college was finally able to give students a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies after becoming accredited; the first war school in the country to do so. Today, the college remains on the cutting edge of technology, tactics, and worldly studies to keep service members at the forefront of national security and military strategies.
